W2WW Events: Farewell to a Hero

General Ed Thomas

We traveled to Arlington Cemetery for a hero’s farewell to our great friend’s father, Brigadier General Edward Thomas. Called to Army active duty in early 1941, he served with pioneer parachute units, the 503d and 505th Parachute Infantry Regiments, until he was assigned to the US-Canadian First Special Service Force, in its World War II campaigns in Italy and France. We had the honor of knowing “the General” and traveling with him and his family through the South of France to celebrate its liberation from the German occupation.  Everywhere we went there was an outpouring of admiration and affection for this brave man and his comrades-in-arms.  General Thomas’ wife, Ann, daughters Ann and Caroline and grandsons Dan and Davis will follow him today to his last and rightful resting place among our country’s finest men.

In a letter to Ed’s family, Rayman Gotti, a Frenchman, said this. “I was so impressed with this group and with Ed Thomas in particular, that I made it my mission to personally install monuments all over Southern France in recognition of their enormous sacrifice to liberate my country.  The First Special Service Forces were an elite commando unit of Americans and Canadians who were sent behind enemy lines to destroy key defenses.  They recruited only the toughest men, who sometimes darkened their faces with shoe polish for night missions and earned the nickname, “black devils.”  Ed Thomas was a brave and great soldier, at a time when brave and great soldiers were desperately needed and he will be honored as long as I live.”

W2WW Events: Bette Midler's New York Restoration Project

We have been supporters of New York Restoration Project but it wasn't until we took a tour of the NYRP's Community Gardens that the impact of this organization on the communities of New York City was so dramatically demonstrated. Bette Midler, NYRP's hands-on founder began the organization to carry out a dream of a cleaner, greener New York City.  You can see from the photos below what great things have been accomplished.  If you want to create your own walking tour, just go to the website and download the map.   If you haven't been to Swindler Cove, it is well worth the trip.   This interactive ecosystem that has been created on the bank of the Harlem River, on what was once an illegal dumping ground. It is now NYRP's crown jewel in the Public Park Projects.   NYRP.org is a fantastic interactive website where you can learn so many things about the programs and progress, how to get involved and where your help is so greatly needed.

The next best thing to Bastille Day in France is the annual fete put on by Michele and Patricia Jean at Stissing House in Pine Plains, New York on Sunday, July 11.  It is well worth the drive to experience the authentic celebration complete with a lively Petanque Tournament, bottomless glasses of rose and traditional Provencal fare.  The festivities begin at noon and reservations are required.  For further information please call t. 518.398.8800

W2WW Events: Newport in New York

Posted By: KK on 06/8/10 4:58 AM | Categories: W2WW Events

Camilla Bradley, Hilary Dick, Kim Dryer, Karen Klopp & Robert
Matheson threw a trunk show for Newport in New York, complete with piles of satin, bold prints, and slightly sloshed shopaholics. Guests popped up at a lovely UES apartment to
browse jewelry by Sequin, dresses by CK Bradley and menswear by REDD.
We're skeptical that any of the ladies and gents in attendance have ever
been on a boat, but at least they'll be well-dressed for their next
three-hour tour. See more fun pics at GuestofaGuest.com!

What2WearWhere would like to say a huge THANK YOU to Calypso St.Barth for hosting W2WW and Kick Kennedy, Legacy Ambassador for the Waterkeeper Alliance for an event to announce W2WW’s Project Green Chic and to welcome Kick as W2WW’s Green Fashion Editor.  Guests sipped delicious cocktails by Right Gin and crisp water from Keeper Springs while shopping for the spring season, Calypso St. Barth donated 10% of all purchases at this event to Waterkeeper Alliance and Riverkeeper.

Kilimanjaro with a high profile group called Summit on the Summit to raise awareness of the global water crisis, and was also honored by Solar 1 as a Young Environmentalist.
