Costumes: WHO'S BAD?!

Posted By: KK on 10/30/09 3:30 AM | Categories: Costumes

Last minute Halloween anxiety?  Don't know who to be?  Here are two slightly obvious yet BRILLIANT options that the whole world is a-flutter talking about.  Former King and newly crowned Queen of pop: Michael Jackson and Lady Gaga!  Don't have time to order online?  You can find most items locally, and don't forget American Apparel, Ricky's NYC or Forever21.  Happy Halloween!

Michael Jackson:  Why not channel MJ’s iconic military look from his 1992 Dangerous Tour.  After all, this exact fashion statement did inspire Balmain’s Autumn/Winter 09 collection!

BB Dakota Lombard Jacket ($75), Silence & Noise Satin Trouser ($58), Michael Jackson Curly Thriller Wig ($13.95), Glitter Sequin Glove ($5.99), REI Silk Socks ($7.50), Cole Haan Deana Loafers ($278.90), Classic Black Fedora ($7.50), Ray-Ban Aviator Glasses ($129), Chanel Red Lipstick ($30), Baby Alive Doll ($16.99)

Lady Gaga Costume:  Grab a blonde wig (make sure the bangs are perfectly straight), vintage sunglasses and funky shoes.  Anything lacey will do the trick (or treat).
Blonde Wig ($13.99), Vintage Lady Gaga Poker Face Sunglasses ($39.99), Arden B. Latex One Shoulder Body Suit ($19), Sheer Lace Gloves ($15), Victoria's Secret Lace Leggings ($39.50), Leopard Print Bootie ($49), Ardell Fake Lashes ($3.49), Revlon Silver Nailpolish ($4.79), Rhinestone Knuckle Ring ($4.80), Glam Box 24k Gold Leaf Powder ($6), Bar Scale Necklace ($14.80)

What to Wear: Cool Capes

Posted By: KK on 10/29/09 3:19 AM | Categories: What to Wear

What do you think about capes and ponchos?  The three of us have weighed on this colder weather category as the temperature starts droppin'!

KK: Shopping on Madison, running to catch the bus to work on Fifth, or picking up from school in Carnegie Hill, I like my capes on the
short and symmetrical side. These are all perfect for fall’s changing
weather.

Ralph Lauren Gala Belted Wool Cape ($249), Burberry Cotton Trench Cape ($850), Burberry Wool Trench Capelet ($895), Michael Kors Stand-collar Double-Breasted Coat ($199.99), Cassette Cape in Black ($147)

GB: I'm liking the look for outdoor wear, particularly with the expected fluctuating temps of fall – but I really love wrapping up in a big sweater, a la Theory or Tomas Maier below.

Shoshanna Funnel Neckl Cape ($395), Theory Riddick Sweater Poncho ($275), Elizabeth and James Double Breasted Cape ($695), Tomas Maier Cashmere Cape (on sale $632.50), Marni Wool Cape ($670)

LG:  I love the dramatic effect a cape can create with an outfit.  Due to the excess fabric one is draping over the body, stick with a sleek and structured look underneath.  Leggings, skinny jeans or a spandex dress with tights and boots work really well.

McQ by Alexander McQueen Cocoon Sweater ($349), Pringle 1815 Black Oversized Cape ($305.25), French Connection Lark Wool Jacket ($298), DKNY Meghan Cape with Leather Trim ($347), Derek Lam Cashmere Cape ($1,990)

“Casablanca” is the dramatic theme of The Boys Club of New York Fall Dance on Tuesday, November 3rd.  For our oh-so-stylish Co-Chairs, Alice Ross and Liete Einhorn, we channeled Bogie’s elegant style to create a dramatic black and white effect, so evocative of that genre.  We also put together a look for our friend and Junior Committee member, Jacqueline Stahl, who will keep the party going for the after-dinner dancing at Rick’s Café.  What a fez-tive evening it will be!

What to Wear: Fur or Faux

Posted By: KK on 10/22/09 3:45 AM | Categories: What to Wear

One of fashion's eternal questions: real or faux fur?  Join in our debate!

KK: While there
some great faux furs out there, there’s nothing like the real thing
baby – especially these fur funnels that come in all sorts of colors,
designed by our friends at glamourpussNYC.com.  They will fleece-up
your fashion from jeans to evening.

Brooks Brothers Shearling Trapper Hat ($228), Karl Donaghue Sheared Rabbit Wrap Gilet ($1,150), UGG Leather Shearling Gloves ($95), Glamourpuss Black Fur Funnel ($198), Milly Rabbit Vest ($740)

GB: Totally faux!  There are super luxurious (and obv. cruelty-free) options these days that are even difficult for the trained fashionista's eye to distinguish between.  The days of plastic-y, synthetic mop-like fakes are looong gone so there's no real reason not to!

Brian Reyes Faux Otter Fur Car Coat ($1,495), Lauren by Ralph Lauren Calbourne Faux Fur Jacket ($499), Albertus Swanepoel Onegin Faux Fur Cossak Hat ($300)

Alice %20 Olivia Faux Fur Shawl Collar Jacket ($385), Bop Basics Faux Fur Trapper Hat ($98), Faux Fur Rachel Vest ($60)

LG:  When it comes to the question, to fur or to faux, I swing both ways.  Here are some of my fav real and reproduction furry finds.

To Faux…  Aqua Leopard-Faux Jacket ($188), Topshop Faux Fur Coat ($250), Gryphon “Glam Rock” Faux Fur Vest ($750)
