Actually the Scots are already here in full-force for a wonderful assortment of events this week, starting with The American-Scottish Foundation Wallace Award Gala Dinner On Tuesday, November at The University Club. The evening celebrates the 55th Anniversary of the ASFs formation by Lord Malcolm Douglas-Hamilton and will benefit the ongoing work of the ASF. And 50 runners are coming from Scotland for the New York Marathon in support of the Archie Foundation which helps childrens wards in hospitals in North and West of Scotland.

Our friend and fabulous couture designer Maggie Norris invited us to this celeb studded event in DC which supports Becky’s Fund’s efforts in promoting the prevention of domestic and dating violence. 2011 “Walk This Way” Charity Fashion Show will take place Wednesday, November 2nd and has the awesome athletic support of Washington Redskins’ Brian Orakpo, Anthony Armstrong, DeAngelo Hall, Capitals’ John Carlson, Karl Alzner, DC United’s Ben Olsen, and others, all taking a stand against domestic violence. What to Wear: For a Hunt Ball Long and Black

Our friend Lindsay L. has written in to ask, “I am invited to a Hunt Ball, what should I wear?” Traditionally women wore either white or black and long to a hunt ball but through the years, the accepted color is black. It creates quite a spectacle on the dance floor with the women in elegant black gowns and men in tuxedo’s or their “pinks” which are actually scarlet formal hunt jackets. We went to Bergdorf Goodman to find this sensational selection with a range of price. Whether you want one-shoulder, halter, sheer sleeved or ruffles, you won’t find a more stunning line-up anywhere. Any one of these beauties will take you right through the season of long formal dresses.

We consulted Pat Ike, our expert on the subject, for a bit of history, “White or black and long is correct…more specifically…no color. Proper term is always scarlet when referring to “pinks”. Named after the tailor Mr. Pink. Traditionally red is never used as a descriptive term. When the British soldiers came home from the war (redcoats) they hunted in their uniform coats.”

Please do not miss our friend, Dee Dee Ricks’s film, The Education of Dee Dee Ricks, premiering on HBO on Thursday, October 27. It is an intimate and passionately told documentary chronicling how a successful businesswoman and mother’s life changes dramatically after being diagnosed with breast cancer. Dee Dee sets out to make life easier for less fortunate cancer patients and the film brilliantly captures Dee Dee’s treatment and transformation, her heartache and eventual triumph. Through the process Dee Dee meets and partners with Dr. Harold P. Freeman, the founder and pioneer of Patient Navigation for the purpose of eliminating barriers to timely cancer screening, diagnosis, treatment, and supportive care. She is chairman of the board of the Harold P. Freeman Patient Navigation Institute and in that role, successfully lobbied Congress to reenact the Patient Navigation Act as part of sweeping health care reform policy.
