Every season begins with looking back: the designers revisit trends of yore, and we fling open our oversized Tupperware bins and dig through the back of our closets to see just what it was we wore this time last year. Despite the thrill of new trends, most of us probably feel that the first Fall shopping we should do is in our own closet (View from 5 ft. 2 and Your Saving Style inspire on this front). Next step: after considering your bank account, and perhaps the pros and cons of fast fashion (see: Consumerism Killed My Soul), a visit to your local thrift store or flea market for vintage finds might replace that mall excursion you were imagining. With a wealth of inspiration from the blogosphere, there’s never been a better time to invest in – or just be inspired by – style from the past.

What to Wear: Society Stylist's Little Black Dress Experiment

My inspiration comes
from the chicly-dressed “American Women” on the  streets of New York,
the style capital of the world.  Nowhere is fashion more evidenced than
outside the iconic Metropolitan Museum on Manhattan’s Upper East Side.
This is crossroads of so many influential fashion styles. There are
the “ladies who lunch”, dashing into the Met for Committee Meetings,
professionals from all corners of the art world coming and going, the
“Gossip Girls”  running late to their nearby schools, travellers from
all over the globe,  and street performers entertaining the lively the
crowds who make the “steps at the Met” such a destination.
 
This Ann Taylor LBD is a fantastic transitional dress
that can take you from the heat of Indian Summer, yet  still look
substantial in the cool of late fall and winter. We had a ball shopping
at AT for the perfect accessories – a leopard cardigan and a sleek black
belt that created this of-the-moment, belted cardigan look that can
literally go anywhere in the city.  The necklace is one of Ann Taylors
belts looped over my head but the shoes are the piece de resistance – AT's 4”
platform pumps in a gorgeous new shade of grey, made textually more
interesting with the mix of reptile skin and patent leather.  Also like
the handsome black and brass Michele watch,
paired with a Alexis Bittar cuff and Barry Kieselstein Cord alligator
earrings. The look is only complete with my black
oversized Ann Taylor sunglasses, no New Yorker would be caught dead
without some fabulous shades. You never know who is watching!

What to Wear: Mad Men Inspired Emmy Dresses

In honor of this year Emmy Awards this Sunday, August 29, we put together four different looks channeling our favorites characters from the AMC's series Mad Men – Betty, Joan and Peggy. It was quite the challenge to pick just one of Betty's chic costumes so we decided to do two from her turquoise theater look to her Italian mob mode, its amazing how contemporary such fashions are today. Each Evening look of Betty's would look perfect on any red carpet. The ever sultry Joan always knows just what to wear to enhance her features. This Redux Charles Chang-Lima body hugging gown exudes sex appeal yet in an appropriated manner revealing just the right amount of skin. Ah Peggy! If she only had the time or the opportunity to wear a gown we for sure thought she would go floral like this Carmen Marc Valvo, paired with opera gloves and demure kitten heels.
