“Are you crazy?” Is the question when friends find out I am driving my daughter Kell to SMU in Dallas, Texas. But I am looking forward to it as a bit of bonding, the romance of the open road and a sense of an adventure. Secretly I wonder if where along the way I will say, “This IS crazy,” but I hope to make it at least through the tunnel before this revelation occurs. First stop The Homestead in Virginia, for a bit of mountain air and natural springs. Second night will be spent at the Peabody Hotel in Memphis, TN, hopefully arriving in time for the Duck Parade, a hundred year-old tradition. Third day we roll into Dallas, moving Kell into her dorm, while I seek shelter at Mansion on Turtle Creek. Not a bad itinerary! With Audible as my new best friend, I am looking forward to listening to Jay McInerney’s Bright Precious Days, for the second time. It evoked such sweet forgotten memories of the past in New York City. The rich language lends itself to listening out loud, as the carefully crafted characters evolve.
For How to Pack for a Road Trip in summer, we put together a well chosen wardrobe for both style and comfort. While some would opt for shorts, I am packing a few stretchy dresses and a skirt that can stand up to days in the car and evenings dining in pleasant surrounds. Must pack bathing suit and gym wear for end of day swims and workouts. As you might imagine, there is only room in the packed back for an itty bitty bag for me. So I have chosen a tight edit based on shades of blues and whites.
